Recent discovery. A cross between the NBW-41 and NBW-50b. It seems

NBW-44 RED T RED R —– 63x107mm rectangle; leaders
Known as "The hole in the Canoe patch". Story I¹m told is that this
long patch was issued for one year-probably pre-1948. But the
patch was not easy to fit on the red coat and that precipitated
the permanent change to the shorter style the following year.

Three twill varieties exist. The chronology seems to
begin with coarse twill decreasing to no-twill with the
last variety. The "a" variety is Twill Left Rough
(TLR) and sometimes has a darker red. I have reason
to believe that this "a" variety may have been available in 1949. The "b" variety is Twill Left Medium (TLM).
The "c" variety is No Twill (NT).
